Berlin, the Capital of Germany

Berlin is the Hauptstadt (capital) of Germany and with almost 3.5 million Einwohnern (inhabitants), it is also the largest city in Germany. It is also the second largest city in the Europäischen Union (European Union).

Berlin is an important centre for Medien (media), Politik (politics) and Kultur (culture) in Europe. This city has a well documented history that is known by most people across the World. After the second World War Berlin was split into Berlin East, which was under Soviet leadership, and Berlin West, which was under the leadership of the Westallierten (Western Allies). The Wiedervereinigung (German Reunification) took place in 1990.

There are many sights to see in Berlin. The most famous of them is das Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate) at the Pariser Platz. The Brandenburg Gate is the true sign of the city and the symbol of triumph over the seperation.

Not far from the Brandenburg gate is the Reichstag building with the glass dome. This is the home of the German Regierung (government) and the building is the second biggest Touristenattraktion (tourist attraction) in German.

Other attractions include the famous shopping strip Kurfürstendamm, die Museumsinsel (museum island) in the river Spree, the TV tower, the gigantic Tiergarten (Zoo, lit: animal garden) and the Checkpoint Charlie.
