Titanic – Never to be repeated

The titanic was a huge Schiff (ship), that was in its time, the biggest ship in the world. On the 14th of April 1912 the Titanic sank on its Jungfernfahrt (maiden voyage) from Southampton to New York after a collision with an Eisberg (iceberg) in the Atlantic ocean. Unfortunately there were not enough Rettungsboote (life boats) for all 2207 passengers on board, which lead to major kaos. Due to a Zeitdruck (timely deadline), the people tried to save their own lives and the egoistic survival instinct kicked in, which in this kind of situation is completely normal.

Although the Kapitän (captain) gave the order, that women and children were to board the lifeboats first, this Befehl (order) was not followed. Many young ladies and young men between 16 and 35 years of age were able to save themselves, due to the speed in which the people were moving to the lifeboats. The Titanic sank within 160 minutes and in total 1517 people lost their lives.

Today there are many security measures in place, due to the Titanic Vorfall (incident). A Kreuzfahrtschiff (cruise ship) must have double the amount of life boats as souls on board. On each side of the ship, there are as many lifeboat seats as people travelling, should for example the ship sink and tip to one side and the lifeboats are no longer of use.

This is just one example why it is very unlikely that a Tragödie (tragedy) such as the Titanic incident occur again.
